Last Words

Look at the sky!
What do you see?
Cloud? Stars or the moon?
There’s a land far beyond the cloud.
It’s a land for the good only
For that is where the Maker lives.
I’m going to see the Maker
We’ll be coming back for you.
Be good my son
Be righteous my son
For the Maker is coming with a prize.

A Palmwine Tapper

The Beginnig:

Plain words were insufficient to describe the visitors that came to see Mr Abimbola Lateef in his house at a time when heads were supposed to be resting. Mr Lateef, though still awake with his family, all seated in the living room was not expecting anybody as it was almost nine pm. His wife, Mrs Felicia and his daughter, Seun, not to talk of Kola his little boy weren’t the type that had many friends. Most visitors often came to see him. But, he couldn’t fathom out who the men at the door were.
Ordinarily, by eight pm, Mr Lateef and his family would be in bed. But that day was different because he had promised his children a story before bed time. He was at the climax of the story when the knock welcomed distraction.
Seun and her parents with his younger brother were the only occupant of the house. Mr Lateef was a palmwine tapper and a well known distributor of the local wine. The local drink was his main source of income. The palm product was gladly cherished by young and old men, in their community, popularly known as Ijebu. Seun and her brother, Kola had lived in that community from birth. And, they hadn’t visited any other place aside their village where they carried out their activity.
